The Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings engaged in a lively game on Tuesday, away from the double-overtime playoff memories of the past decade. Both teams, positioned at the bottom of the standings, were in dire need of a spark. The Kings arrived at the United Center ranked 30th in the NHL, missing their long-time captain Anže Kopitar, while the Hawks entered 31st in Connor Bedard’s first season as captain.
The Blackhawks (4-8-0) ended their homestand with a victory, defeating the Kings 2-1. They completed a seven-game home stretch with a record of 3-4-0. Against the Florida Panthers, their previous effort fell short due to a few errors, resulting in a 3-2 loss. However, they maintained discipline throughout the game with the Kings (3-6-2) by playing cohesively for the full duration.
We’re in a spot where we need wins, but I thought we did it in a way that was conducive to continue to win. We didn’t give a lot up, we stayed on top of them, and that’s the way we need to play to be successful, said coach Jeff Blashill.
The game began with the Kings taking an early lead after a previous 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers. Samuel Helenius scored for the Kings after only 2 minutes and 31 seconds into the game. However, the Blackhawks responded firmly, evening the shot attempts at 21 after the first period.
Patrick Kane noted, You’re down 1-0 early in the game and just kind of stuck with it, didn’t really give up much. I thought we were the better hockey team tonight, we deserved to win.
The Blackhawks’ scoring began in the second period with Roman Kantserov’s power-play goal. This marked Kantserov’s fifth goal of the season, the highest among NHL rookies at that point. The Hawks’ power play has been underperforming, with a league-low 8.3% efficiency, but they managed to generate enough opportunities to score against the Kings.
Kane and Bedard’s switch in positions during the power play added a new dynamic. Kane expressed his willingness to adapt to playing on the left side, saying, It feels pretty good to pull and shoot and make plays on the forehand, so I’ll keep working to get comfortable with it and try to own that position.
Blashill’s revised lineup for the game included Kane, Oliver Moore, and Frank Nazar on the third line. This trio was effective, outshooting the Kings 10-1 while on the ice together. Nazar has been essential in creating opportunities, although his finishing still requires improvement. Moore, reinstated after being a scratch against the Panthers, demonstrated his value with eight shot attempts in limited ice time.
Wyatt Kaiser scored the game-winning goal, sealing the victory with 7 minutes, 17 seconds remaining in the third period. Bedard’s critical defensive play in the final seconds, blocking Artemi Panarin’s shot and drawing a key penalty, ensured the win.
I think he gets knocked about on defense more than he should, he can be a really good defensive player, said Coach Blashill regarding Bedard. There’s a reason why he’s out there at the end of the game. He is hyper-competitive, and that block’s indicative of that.
The team hopes to build on this hard-fought victory as they face upcoming road games against the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. Patrick Kane reflected on the team’s resilience, stating, The attitude and the demeanor throughout the locker room, it’s been tough sledding for sure, but just to kind of hang in there and keep grinding, I think we’ve been playing better. So, nice to be rewarded tonight and have a good feeling after the game.
