Lincoln Riley, head coach of the USC Trojans, continues his quest for the program’s first College Football Playoff appearance under his leadership. In his first four years, the team has not reached this goal. Yet, Riley is convinced he remains the right person to guide the Trojans to national success.
Currently, the Trojans hold a 6-2 record. This does not position them as strong CFP contenders now, but a strong finish could bolster their case for a bid. Despite previous shortfalls, rumors suggest both Riley and USC consider parting ways. However, during a press conference on Tuesday, Riley addressed these rumors. He affirmed his commitment to USC, stating, “If I didn’t want to be at this place, I wouldn’t have come here in the first place. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to leave. This is where I want to be. I’m the right person to be here.”
Throughout Riley’s tenure, USC has always maintained a record above .500. While the program has not returned to the status of a national powerhouse under his guidance, Riley’s consistent performance suggests that USC could do far worse. If the university believes in their potential to become annual CFP contenders, a decision on whether to retain Riley might arise.
The upcoming weeks are crucial. Three of USC’s final four games are against leading Big Ten teams. These include challenging matchups against No. 4 Indiana, No. 7 UCLA, and Ohio State. Success in these games might not only secure Riley’s position but also enhance their chances of entering the CFP this season.
