Chicago Cubs Make Tough Roster Decision Involving Jameson Taillon
Jameson Taillon faced a harsh reality in Major League Baseball as his recent performances threatened the Chicago Cubs’ playoff ambitions. With a 5.92 ERA across 15 starts and 25 home runs allowed in 76 innings in 2026, Taillon acknowledged he was underperforming. After surrendering seven runs in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, he admitted, “The results speak for themselves. I’m confident I can figure it out, but when you’re going out there and hurting the team, it’s obviously not a good place to be.”
The Cubs decided they could no longer keep Taillon in the rotation. They designated him for assignment before a series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals and called up right-hander Andrew Wantz from Triple-A Iowa. Taillon, aged 34, leaves the Cubs with a 4.21 ERA over 96 games. Manager Craig Counsell explained, “We had to make a hard decision as to whether we thought Jameson was going to pitch again… (Taillon’s) not only produced as a Cub. He’s had a big impact on our culture and on our clubhouse.”

Taillon’s metrics were among the worst in MLB at the time, with a -1.1 fWAR and a 6.74 FIP (minimum 60 innings). The Cubs anticipated improvement during his seven-week break for a hamstring injury, hoping he might refine his command and limit home runs. However, his first two starts post-injury showed no such progress. According to Counsell, “Unfortunately, the hitters were obviously telling us something different, but, in the end, it’s more production.”
Javier Assad will take Taillon’s rotation spot, potentially starting against the New York Yankees. The Cubs are also eyeing rotation enhancements, with Edward Cabrera expected to return by mid-August, following his own hamstring recovery. Taillon’s departure impacted the clubhouse, with Counsell praising him for teaching teammates how to conduct themselves as professional players. Shortstop Dansby Swanson, who joined the Cubs the same offseason as Taillon, expressed sorrow over the loss of such a close teammate, stating, “Definitely on my Mount Rushmore of teammates.”
Fellow starter Matthew Boyd noted that as trade deadlines approach, roster changes become common. Despite Taillon’s on-field struggles, he maintained a consistent presence off the field. Ian Happ, the team’s longest-tenured player, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the bond built with Taillon over the years.
Taillon previously showed resilience, playing a crucial role in the 2023 and 2025 seasons. His ability to make in-season adjustments was vital, especially in playoff-deciding games. Counsell acknowledged, “This year there was just less of those moments where I think he had gotten it going…”
Taillon’s tenure with the Cubs didn’t unfold as anticipated in his contract’s final year. Pitching coach Tommy Hottovy and others believe his big-league career is not over yet. The challenges lie in rectifying issues within his pitching mechanics. Boyd concluded, “It comes down to performance and we’re all held to that same measure… but that doesn’t make it easier.”
