Wildfires Devastate Gironde Region: A Firsthand Account

Guillaume Bos detailed the devastation he witnessed on Friday as a fire swept through his village in the Gironde region of southwestern France. His home lies in the area hardest hit by the raging wildfires. Around him, he observed, “everything is burned as far as the eye can see.”

“It’s a real disaster,” stated Bos, a 36-year-old business manager and forest owner residing in Le Temple. This village of about 600 people sits roughly 18 miles west of Bordeaux. Fires have raged for days, driven by extremely hot and dry weather, and firefighters have struggled to contain them.

Bos received evacuation orders on Friday afternoon. Despite this, he, along with others in France, decided to remain with local farmers and forest owners to combat the flames. His wife and son evacuated the area.

“When your wife and son leave, and you don’t know how things are going to turn out — yeah, it’s not easy,” he reflected.

Bos, along with his friends, used tractors and trailers carrying water tanks to save most houses in the village center. However, about six homes and most of the pine forest surrounding them were destroyed. Although the worst has passed, they continue spraying water around Le Temple to prevent the fire from reigniting.
