Chicago White Sox Eager for Playoff Spot
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Will Venable reflected on the 2026 Chicago White Sox, describing them as ‘excited’. This excitement extends to playing baseball, coming to the field, and being teammates. They are eager to tackle and overcome the challenges that arise.
This enthusiasm positions the Sox well for their first postseason appearance since 2021. As the final week of the regular season commenced, they held the third American League wild-card spot, leading Houston Astros by three games with six games remaining. They are also competing for the AL Central title, trailing the Cleveland Guardians by a single game. The final stretch began Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
It’s a significant turnaround for a team that faced losses exceeding 101 games annually over the past three years, including a record 121 defeats in 2024. Venable discussed this year’s journey during a pregame interview.
Venable acknowledged the team’s imperfections. Different times of the season brought varying performances. They faced offensive slumps, pitching issues, and challenges in base running and defense.
‘The special thing about this group is watching them find a way to win,’ said Venable.
September was not without difficulties, including a 5-10 stretch that saw them slip from first place in the AL Central. They maintain a tiebreaker over the Guardians, having won the season series. Venable noted that the team has recently returned to form.
‘It’s been incredible to see them grow, face challenges, and transform into their authentic selves,’ he said.
The team leads the AL in runs and ranks third in home runs, featuring hitters like Miguel Vargas, Munetaka Murakami, and Colson Montgomery, all exceeding 30 home runs. Relentless bullpen performance, with Grant Taylor playing a key role, contributed significantly.
‘We have outstanding performers, like Vargas and Taylor, but contributions come from everywhere. Each win, especially the unforgettable ones, showcases a unique team effort,’ said Venable.
The collaboration and buy-in from the players have also been essential. Whether for a batter switch or pitching strategy changes, their adaptability is praised.
‘We emphasize an environment where players are happy and contribute. This approach is possible due to experienced and open-minded players,’ Venable stated.
Pressure of playoff contention is acknowledged, but Venable envisions the ‘right type’ of pressure as the drive to play well for teammates, not merely to reach playoffs.
‘Our job is to remind players of their achievements and ensure they remain true to themselves. We aim to keep the environment relaxed and enjoyable as they seize an incredible opportunity,’ Venable concluded.
