Chris Brown Pleads Guilty to Affray in London Altercation

Chris Brown, the Grammy-winning singer, admitted guilt on Friday for affray related to a brawl at a London nightclub. The altercation led to injuries for a music producer. Brown, aged 37, changed his plea at Southwark Crown Court in London. He had originally rejected more severe charges stemming from what was described by prosecutors as a ‘vicious attack’ in 2023.

In exchange for his guilty plea, the charges of assault, attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon, specifically a bottle, were dismissed by prosecutors. Omololu Akinlolu, a friend and vocal coach of Brown, also admitted guilt to affray. The pair was scheduled for trial in October.

Though Brown denied striking Abraham Diaw with a bottle at the Tape nightclub in the upscale Mayfair area in February 2023, prosecutors argued the incident was captured on surveillance footage amidst a packed venue. Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service, stated following the plea, ‘This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle to hit the victim’s head twice.’

Campbell added, ‘This type of violence is completely unacceptable, and the Crown Prosecution Service is committed to working diligently, alongside police and criminal justice partners, to prosecute cases like this and demonstrate that no one is beyond the law.’

Brown had been released on a bail of 5 million pounds ($6.75 million) which permitted him to tour across Europe and North America last summer. On Friday, he was again granted bail and will face sentencing on October 26 for the affray charge, which can result in a maximum of three years in prison.

Leaving the courthouse in a tan suit, gold-rimmed sunglasses, and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap, Brown signed autographs for fans. The singer gained fame as a teenager in 2005 and received his first Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2011 with ‘F.A.M.E.’ His recent Grammy win in the same category was for ’11:11 (Deluxe)’ in 2025.
