FIFA is looking into Argentina’s behavior following the World Cup final. During the match, Argentina’s Leandro Paredes was involved in a physical altercation with Spain players Eric Garcia and Gavi. Additionally, Spain’s captain, Rodri, was struck in the stomach as he passed Argentina’s Nahuel Molina.

De la Fuente shared his thoughts with Spanish public broadcaster TVE on Thursday, stating, ‘It cannot be allowed.’ He confessed he did not witness the incidents initially, as he was ‘celebrating with other people.’ Despite not seeing the events firsthand, he criticized the behavior of the Argentine players, who he had previously praised, along with their coach.

FIFA has not disclosed details regarding the scope of its investigation or whether witness statements from Spain’s players and staff might be involved. On Wednesday, Argentina’s assistant coach Roberto Ayala offered an apology for his encounter with Dani Olmo, describing it as a shove rather than a punch.

De la Fuente commended his team for their professionalism in handling the situation. Speaking in the TVE interview, he stated, ‘I want to highlight our behavior in the face of that kind of aggression and provocation.’ He emphasized that the Spanish players maintained composure and demonstrated true professionalism during the event.

Following the match, the Spanish squad formed a guard of honor for Argentina’s players as they approached the podium to receive their medals from U.S. President Donald Trump. However, when Rodri lifted the trophy, many Argentine players turned away from the ceremony.

FIFA’s disciplinary regulations permit a special prosecutor to ‘request the opening of disciplinary proceedings and propose that disciplinary measures be imposed on member associations, clubs, and individuals.’ No timeline has been provided for any potential actions, and it remains uncertain when any penalties for Argentina might take effect, given their lack of upcoming competitive matches.
