Recent social media videos depict tensions rising outside a New Jersey detention center as law enforcement and protesters clash. On Friday night, demonstrators gathered at the Delaney Hall facility in Newark faced efforts from agents to clear them from the entrance. This resulted in some protesters being detained, as highlighted in footage shared by Patrick Nealis on X. In response, Newark Police dispatched several vehicles with numerous officers to manage the situation.
A coordinated law enforcement action successfully removed blockages at the facility’s main entrance, allowing vehicle movement. Nealis noted vehicles were finally able to use the side entrance, which had been previously obstructed. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) addressed the situation through a social media post, emphasizing that civil unrest would not hinder their operations. They highlighted earlier footage showing a masked protester’s detention, reinforcing their position against such protests.
The Delaney Hall detention center has become a central point for demonstrations opposing President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. The protests have grown due to allegations of poor living conditions within the facility, prompting a hunger strike by detainees. The federal government has denied these allegations, accusing protesting groups of escalating the situation. Despite these denials, demonstrators consistently attempt to disrupt the facility’s operations.
Video Shows Protester Hit By Vehicle
Nealis also unveiled footage of a protester being struck by a vehicle leaving the center. The video captures attempts by protesters to block vehicles and the aftermath of one protester falling. Efforts by others to assist were quickly made while attempts to block additional vehicles continued.
New Funding to Fight ICE Detainee Deportations
In response to ongoing immigration challenges, New Jersey Governor Mike Sherill announced additional funding for state programs aiding immigrants facing deportation. The Detention Deportation Defense Initiative received a $12 million increase, bringing total funding to over $20 million. Sherill emphasized the importance of legal access for low-income families, including detainees at Delaney Hall. The initiative aims to uphold constitutional rights, providing essential legal representation amid growing federal immigration enforcement challenges. Additionally, a Rapid Legal Response Initiative will expand statewide emergency immigration defense services.
New Jersey Police Sergeant Charged
Darryl Brown, a sergeant with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, faces charges after allegedly stealing camera equipment from photojournalist Angelina Katsanis during a protest. Katsanis’s gear was reportedly traced to Brown’s home using a geo-tracking device. Footage allegedly shows Brown interacting with the gear bag. Subsequent searches revealed several missing items. Brown is charged with third-degree theft and is suspended without pay while investigations continue.
