Scientists report significant changes in the Mediterranean Sea due to climate change. Rising temperatures, driven by the burning of fossil fuels, are altering the ecosystem. New and invasive species are decimating indigenous fish populations. Coastal communities face challenges in maintaining traditional livelihoods.
Irreversible Changes
Ernesto Azzuro, a marine biologist with the Italian National Research Council, notes that the Mediterranean’s biodiversity is experiencing irreversible changes. The loss of this ecological heritage impacts both the environment and local cultures.
Warming Waters
The Mediterranean has become a climate change “hot spot.” Scientists expect water temperatures to rise by 2 to 6 degrees Celsius by 2100. Ronan McAdam, an oceanographer, attributes this to the sea’s enclosed nature, preventing heat from dissipating easily.
Invasive Species
Invasive species such as the spotted puffer fish and lionfish are thriving in these warmer waters. These species are spreading from regions influenced by the Suez Canal. Rising sea temperatures coincide with this spread, disrupting native fish populations like Cyprus’s red mullet.
Mitigation Efforts
Zoologist Piero Genovesi Papik emphasizes the need to reduce fossil fuel use. Scientists suggest commercializing edible invasive species and employing fishers to catch inedible ones. For instance, the lionfish is commercially valuable. However, species like the dusky spinefoot remain underutilized.
Combating Invasive Spread
About 1,000 invasive species inhabit the Mediterranean, with 800 established populations. The eastern Mediterranean, for example, has lost 93% of its mollusk population. Mussels along the Adriatic Sea are also in decline due to extreme temperatures.
Unless we find populations that can survive these different climates, the future of mussels is grim.
Coping Strategies
Experts propose strategies to limit further invasion. International treaties could mandate treatment of ballast waters in incoming ships. Special paints might prevent species from attaching to ship hulls. Amending fishing policies could also help native species recover.
Future Challenges
Restoration of the Mediterranean environment presents challenges. The focus will be on finding innovative ways to offset the impact of climate change. These efforts aim to restore ecological balance while considering economic aspects.
