Bogota, Colombia – Abelardo de la Espriella, candidate for the Defenders of the Motherland movement, has reportedly triumphed in Colombia’s presidential election. According to the preliminary “quick count” from electoral authorities, he leads with 49.7%, overshadowing left-wing opponent Iván Cepeda, who garnered 48.7%. The remaining votes were blank.
The close margin has delayed a final certified result. An official manual count is anticipated in the days ahead. Historically, Colombia’s quick counts have predicted final outcomes accurately. Following the preliminary count announcement, De la Espriella expressed on social media, “Today begins a new stage for our country, built on the democratic will of millions who chose a great, safe, and prosperous Colombia.”
Iván Cepeda, aligned with outgoing President Gustavo Petro, accepted the quick count results but contested votes from approximately 33,000 ballot boxes. President Petro raised concerns over count irregularities, insisting no candidate should be declared victorious until counts are verified.
Security issues dominated voter concerns, according to polls. Colombia’s decades-long armed conflict has worsened as cartels have expanded drug trafficking and illegal mining control. Reports suggest insurgent group membership doubled over five years, exacerbating displacement and insecurity.
De la Espriella, a millionaire businessman and criminal defense lawyer, is nicknamed “El Tigre”. Endorsed by Donald Trump, he promises harsher security measures, including expansive military assaults on guerrilla camps on his first day in office. He plans to escalate drug-smuggling crackdowns and initiate fracking and abandon Petro’s restrictions on new hydrocarbon contracts.
He earned wealth representing controversial clients, including Alex Saab, a businessman with connections to Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro. De la Espriella built a notable media persona, appearing in promotional videos singing classics like “My Way” and “Volare”. Nicknamed “the devil’s advocate,” his legal empire includes luxury cars and private jets.
Seeking better U.S. relations, De la Espriella recently garnered support from Trump. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised him, stating on social media, “Colombia’s best days are ahead.”
This election illustrates a regional trend toward right-leaning politics, with countries like Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile seeing shifts. Peru might follow, with election results pending.
