Comedian Larry David has voiced strong disapproval of President Donald Trump’s decision to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary with a UFC fight at the White House. In an interview with Variety, David expressed feeling embarrassed as an American due to the event, which he labeled as a “travesty.”
The 78-year-old comedian commented on his worsening sense of patriotism after witnessing the event. He stated, “It was embarrassing. I was embarrassed to be an American.”
David’s remarks occurred during the premiere of his HBO series, Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, a comedy show set to debut on June 26 that features sketch pieces satirizing significant moments in U.S. history. The series also includes appearances by celebrities such as Jerry Seinfeld, Vince Vaughn, Rita Wilson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Barack Obama.
“What else can you say about it?”
Barack Obama’s company, Higher Ground, produced the series. David praised the former president’s ad-libbing skills during the production.
The UFC Freedom 250 event, marking Trump’s 80th birthday, was held on the South Lawn of the White House on June 15, 2026. It welcomed approximately 4,300 attendees, including around 1,200 active-duty service members. The event featured performances by the Marine Band and Zac Brown, and concluded with a Navy and Air Force flyover involving the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds.
As he left the White House to attend the G7 summit in France, President Trump described the event as an unprecedented spectacle in sports. The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment.
