Community Comes Together for Aurora’s Moon Festival
The sixth annual Moon Festival in Aurora provided a vibrant cultural experience for the community. Hosted by Pacifica Square on the city’s far East Side, the event highlighted multicultural unity.
Mary Smart of Aurora appreciated the event’s community spirit. “It’s great that this is a multicultural event that brings people together,” she expressed.
The festival took place at Aurora’s Asian-centric shopping center, Pacifica Square, located at the intersection of Route 59 and New York Street. The celebration, organized in partnership with the Windfall Group and the Global Friendship Exchange Foundation, spanned five hours on Saturday.
Activities started at 2 p.m., featuring over 40 vendors, various food trucks, and dining options within Pacifica Square’s food court. The Moon Festival, a cherished Asian holiday, emphasizes family reunions and gratitude during the harvest season, marked by the fullest moon of the year. Traditional elements such as mooncakes and lanterns were part of the festivities.
Cultural performances showcased traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries. Attendees enjoyed martial arts demonstrations and video game contests. The festival also included the fourth annual Ramen Race, a ramen-eating competition hosted by Strings Ramen, with over $1,000 in cash and prizes.
Chris Loo, a business development manager for the Windfall Group and an Aurora resident, noted the festival’s increasing popularity since its inception in 2020, often attracting over 1,000 visitors in favorable weather.
“The Global Friendship Exchange Foundation, a nonprofit group, organizes this event,” Loo explained. “Their mission is to foster cultural awareness and promote global friendship.” The Moon Festival’s history in Asia dates back to farming communities celebrating the harvest under a full moon. “It’s akin to an Asian Thanksgiving,” Loo added.
Among the notable competitors in the ramen-eating challenge was three-time champion Robert Choi. He faced off against international influencer and food competitor Raina Huang, traveling from the West Coast, along with teams from Best Buy Aurora, Ninjacat Card Shop in Naperville, and Hollywood Casino locations in Aurora and Joliet.
Aurora residents, including Faith Oludoyi and her children, attended the festival. “It’s a wonderful multicultural event,” Faith commented. Her daughter, Temiyato, enjoyed the festive atmosphere and collected sweets.
Jennifer Chen from Naperville, representing the Chinese American Women in Action group, emphasized the event’s value. “Growing up in Naperville, the Asian community has grown significantly,” she remarked. “Having access to such cultural celebrations brings the community closer.”
Various service groups participated, joining the celebration to foster cultural exchange and community collaboration.
