Controversies and Support Define Graham Platner’s Senate Campaign

PORTLAND, Maine — Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maine, held his first significant campaign rally recently. The event came amid reports regarding his past interactions with women.

Last week, stories surfaced about Platner sending explicit messages to several women, raising concerns for his campaign. Additionally, reports about his previous relationships portrayed him in varying lights. While some viewed him positively, others described him as volatile.

One allegation came from a woman who claimed Platner twisted her arm during an argument and locked her in a room, which Platner denied as untrue. Speaking to nearly 600 supporters, he addressed these accusations, asserting his innocence.

“When politically motivated, serious and false accusations are made against me, Maine, you have my back,” Platner said to the supporting crowd.

With the primary election nearing, Democrats in Maine are weighing Platner’s candidacy against the need to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Despite the controversies, Platner frames himself as someone who has overcome his past mistakes.

Some supporters view the text messages as a private issue, while others emphasize the importance of regaining control of the Senate. Yet, concerns remain about potential future revelations regarding Platner’s history.

I think a lot of people are afraid, said Deb Dagnan, chair of Maine’s Piscataquis County Democrats.

Platner’s Strategic Importance

Platner plays a key role in the Democratic strategy to reclaim the Senate. However, his campaign faces continued scrutiny over past incidents, including a tattoo linked to Nazi symbols and inflammatory online comments. Despite this, prominent supporters such as Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ruben Gallego continue to back him.

Recently, Platner joined Representative Ro Khanna and other Democrats in Bar Harbor for a rally to encourage votes days before the state primary. He is a strong contender for the Democratic nomination, especially after his primary opponent, Governor Janet Mills, paused her campaign.

Recent reports mention marital issues between Platner and his wife, Amy Gertner. She had informed the campaign about the text messages last year, which Platner’s team deemed a private matter. Shortly after this news, Platner shared a video where Gertner downplayed the situation as gossip.

Gertner’s stance has resonated with some women, who argue that marriage issues should remain private. Joanne Mason, a Democratic leader, expressed hope that people would not judge Platner solely on personal matters.

Concerns over Potential Scandals

Valerie Tate, a Democrat, praised Gertner’s openness about their marriage, considering it a sign of integrity rather than scandal. However, Tate acknowledged the risk of further damaging revelations arising.

Graham Platner has previously faced scrutiny for a tattoo he later covered, which he claimed he didn’t understand as a Nazi symbol. A former girlfriend alleged he had joked about it. Additionally, past online posts raised issues due to dismissive comments on military sexual assaults and use of homophobic language, for which Platner has apologized.

The ongoing controversies have led some feminist groups to encourage voting for Mills. While she remains on the ballot, Mills has not commented on whether voters should support Platner.

Despite never holding elected office, Platner drives a populist campaign centered on issues such as income inequality and health care. His rallies attract significant attention and fundraising, highlighting a demand for fresh faces in politics.

“People want somebody new,” said Paige Zeigler, a prominent Maine Democratic figure.

Platner’s influence seems strong as many hope for a candidate they can embrace.
