Democrat Xavier Becerra is set to compete in the general election for California governor, advocating his extensive experience as the reason he is the best candidate to lead the country’s most populous state after Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. Becerra’s public service spans over 35 years, including roles such as state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, reinforcing his qualifications among a crowded field of contenders.
On election night, Becerra declared his readiness to protect California’s values and governance. While it remains uncertain who will oppose him, leading competitors include Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News commentator supported by President Donald Trump, and Democrat Tom Steyer, a billionaire climate activist who has invested $215 million into his campaign.
Born in Sacramento to Mexican immigrant parents, Becerra’s personal background plays a significant part in his campaign, drawing parallels to his “underdog” status and a late surge in support. Initially struggling to attract attention, Becerra gained a foothold once Rep. Eric Swalwell exited the race due to accusations of sexual assault, prompting Becerra to unite Democratic backing and secure endorsements from labor organizations and Latino leaders.
Maintaining opposition to President Trump’s policies, Becerra aims to preserve California’s stance against Trump-era initiatives. As attorney general, he initiated over 120 legal challenges against the first Trump administration concerning immigration and climate regulations. Concurrently, Trump levied unfounded allegations of vote fraud, prompting federal inquiries.
Hilton has urged California to restrict mail ballots to those who explicitly request them, rather than distributing them broadly to all registered voters.
Becerra’s tenure as health secretary faced scrutiny over the handling of unaccompanied migrant children during the COVID-19 pandemic and criticisms of inadequate housing conditions in shelters, alongside concerns over insufficient checks on sponsorship placements.
If elected, Becerra plans to declare emergencies to combat energy costs, housing shortages, and to halt home insurance rate increases. While California’s leadership historically has not mirrored its demographic diversity, Becerra would become the first Latino governor since the late 1800s if elected. Newsom, restricted by term limits, is unable to seek a third term.
