Controversies Erupt at 9/11 Commemoration Events
President Donald Trump, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez faced criticism over their actions during 9/11 remembrance ceremonies. Observers accused them of inappropriate behavior at these solemn events.
Backlash at Ground Zero
In Lower Manhattan, Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez were criticized after footage emerged, showing them smiling during the reading of the names of those lost in the attacks. Critics included several high-profile Republicans who questioned their suitability for public service.
“How the hell do you laugh while the names of those murdered on 9/11 are being read aloud?” Senator Ted Cruz asked, echoing the sentiments of many who shared the footage online.
However, an attendee at the event, identifying as a lifelong Republican, suggested the footage was misinterpreted. Michael Ragusa, a former EMT with the New York City Fire Department, explained that Ocasio-Cortez was simply greeting Mamdani.
Ragusa noted, “I was next to them for 2 hours. They were very respectful and stayed the entire time.” His perspective contrasted with accusations of disrespect.

Trump Faces Criticism in Virginia
President Trump faced criticism for appearing to fall asleep during a 9/11 memorial event at the Pentagon. Footage circulated showing Trump with his eyes closed, leading some to accuse him of disrespect. The White House denied these claims, with a spokesperson stating Trump was “solemnly listening and remembering the victims.”
Trump’s history of labeling President Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe” added complexity to the reaction. Despite controversy, some people defended Trump, suggesting exhaustion after a prior political event.
Political Tensions Mark Day of Remembrance
The 25th anniversary of the attacks highlighted political sensitivities. While Ground Zero prohibits political speeches, events held elsewhere saw figures like Trump speaking after victims’ names were read.
At the Ground Zero event, Vice President JD Vance joined former presidents in paying respect. The solemn focus for many remained on honoring those who perished in the attacks on September 11, 2001.
The attacks claimed nearly 3,000 lives, with hijackers crashing planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. Commemorations brought together survivors, first responders, relatives, and political leaders across the nation.
Yet, these events revealed how public figures remain under scrutiny for their actions, even in brief, recorded moments.
