Controversy Surrounds Election Oversight Role for Tina Peters
Tina Peters, known for her conviction related to tampering with voting machines, declined a job offer to oversee elections in Shasta County, Northern California. Curtis, the county’s registrar of voters, mentioned that Peters was unable to accept due to her current efforts to ensure election integrity nationwide. He expressed regret over the loss of her potential contribution, calling it a missed opportunity for the county.
Clint Curtis sparked widespread concern when he proposed hiring Peters, a former county clerk from Colorado, who had her prison sentence shortened following an appeal by former President Trump. Curtis himself, a noted election skeptic, planned to bring Peters on as a consultant to supervise the upcoming November election. Although Peters considered the offer, her attorney, Peter Ticktin, noted her current commitments would not allow for a full-time role.
Peters’ history includes a conviction for breaching voting machines in Colorado as part of an attempt to challenge the 2020 election’s legitimacy. This conviction led to a nine-year sentence, reduced by Colorado Governor Jared Polis, resulting in her early release. Her actions intertwined with associates of the MAGA movement, raising significant legal and political concerns.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, along with other Democratic lawmakers, opposed the idea of Peters receiving employment related to election oversight in the state. Newsom voiced his disapproval on social media, suggesting her presence was unwelcomed in California. The governor emphasized his administration’s intent to block her parole transfer to California, aligning with their stance against felons being involved in election processes.
Curtis and other officials in Shasta County remain at odds over the decision. Assistant registrar Brent Turner, a prominent advocate for election reforms, showed relief over Peters declining the position. Meanwhile, Curtis, who has faced his own challenges, secured ballots in the county with locks and tape, questioning their integrity.
The situation continues to unfold as Curtis awaits the end of his term, following his recent primary defeat. His approach to election oversight has drawn criticism and legal interests, prompting calls for further investigation by authorities, including the FBI.
