WASHINGTON (AP) — Recent developments have sparked controversy in Graham Platner’s pursuit of the U.S. Senate seat for Maine. Over the weekend, his wife publicly addressed reports that he had sent sexually explicit text messages to several women.
This issue adds to the challenges facing Platner as he competes for the Democratic nomination against Republican Senator Susan Collins. This race holds significance as Democrats aim to take control of the Senate.
Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, released a video on X, where she downplayed the reports, describing them as ‘gossip’. She stated, ‘Being married is hard’ while walking along a road in an informal, selfie-style video. ‘I find it really shameful that there’s a group of media outlets and people who are willing to spread gossip,’ she remarked. ‘No marriage is perfect, and I don’t want a perfect marriage, I want my marriage.’
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the texts, revealing that Gertner had informed the campaign in August of the texts she discovered from earlier in their marriage. Her intention was to ensure they wouldn’t pose a political risk. Campaign aides concluded the messages were a private matter, best addressed by the couple, who married in 2023.
In her video, Gertner mentioned their use of counseling to strengthen their marriage: ‘Our marriage counselor helps, my personal counselor helps, Graham’s personal counselor,’ she said. ‘Graham and I have a great marriage.’
This isn’t the first controversy for Platner, who is also an oyster farmer and combat veteran. He previously faced backlash for having a tattoo linked to Nazi symbolism, which he claimed he was unaware of until his campaign began. Furthermore, there was scrutiny over deleted Reddit posts where he appeared dismissive of military sexual assaults and used homophobic slurs.
Despite these controversies, Platner emerged in the Democratic primary after Governor Janet Mills was compelled to withdraw, leaving him as the presumptive nominee. Platner’s campaign has not responded to requests for comment regarding the latest developments.
