Young audiences flocked to theaters nationwide over the weekend, a remarkable shift away from traditional big-budget franchises. Instead of the anticipated success of ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ which experienced a significant drop in its second weekend, crowds gravitated towards the low-budget horror film ‘Backrooms.’ Directed by 20-year-old first-time filmmaker Kane Parsons, ‘Backrooms’ managed an astonishing $81.5 million in its initial three days of release, nearly matching the opening figures of ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ from the previous weekend. Produced with a budget of only $10 million, ‘Backrooms’ marks a significant achievement for emerging filmmakers.
The success of ‘Backrooms’ didn’t overshadow ‘Obsession,’ another debut from YouTuber Curry Barker. Despite being made for under $1 million, ‘Obsession’ maintained strong earnings three weekends in, with a 10% increase this weekend, earning $26.4 million for a second-place finish. This placed it ahead of the legacy ‘Star Wars’ franchise.
Aside from these successes, theaters also premiered ‘The Breadwinner,’ a family comedy led by comedian Nate Bargatze, and ‘Pressure,’ a World War II drama featuring Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser. However, it was the young YouTube creators who drew the largest crowds. Both ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’ were produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, reflecting a growing trend in the industry.
“We were a little worried that they would be competing for the same audience. It’s not the case,” Cinépolis USA CEO Luis Olloqui said, highlighting the varied interests drawing people to theaters.
‘Backrooms’ began as an online creepypasta before evolving into a viral web series. Its intriguing concept caught the attention of production companies, leading to the development of a feature film starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. The film achieved global success with $118 million worldwide, making Parsons the youngest director with a No. 1 film globally and marking a record for A24.
Critics positively reviewed the film, which attracted a young, diverse audience. Exit polls revealed 86% were under 35, 44% under 21, and many attending in groups. The film received a B- CinemaScore but still sparked enthusiasm across all ages.
‘Obsession,’ now Focus Features’ highest-grossing domestic release, has accumulated $104.7 million in North America. In contrast, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ saw a 69% drop from its opening figures, with a global box-office reach of $246.6 million.
Theaters also reported performances from ‘Michael,’ a musical biopic in fourth place with $11.7 million, ‘The Breadwinner’ in fifth with $7.5 million, and ‘Pressure’ opening in seventh with $5.8 million. The heist-romance ‘Tuner’ expanded in its second weekend to earn $1.7 million in its broader release.
“Everyone’s asking what’s the next big thing in Hollywood for movies, and what can bring people back to the movie theater?” noted Paul Dergarabedian, underscoring the impactful shift of YouTube creators shaping film industry trends and redefining the summer movie season.
