NBA legend Charles Barkley has sparked debate by asserting that the WNBA should remain exclusively for women. His comments come amidst discussions about transgender athletes’ participation in the league. Among those invited to the conversation are former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White.
The debate also touches on French transgender basketball player Julie Tetart’s potential involvement in the WNBA. Critics, including two former teammates, have questioned her eligibility and impact.
In a recent interview on the podcast Club Five, teammates Sara Crudo and Martina Bestagno shared their experiences playing alongside Tetart during the 2025-26 season. Despite Tetart’s statistical achievements, they argue that her physical presence might provide an undue advantage.
“If they contact me, I won’t say no. But you have to be realistic: I’m old, and there are far better players than me!” Tetart stated to OutKick when discussing her WNBA prospects.
In response to perceptions about her strength, Bestagno compared Tetart to notable WNBA players such as Brittney Griner and Isabelle Yacoubou. She emphasized the unique combination of size and strength that Tetart brings to the table.
Despite these comments, Club Five’s discussion raised whether Tetart’s physical capabilities justify a WNBA trial. Questions continue regarding her right to compete within such a league.
Crudo highlighted her concerns over Tetart’s inclusion, citing fairness and opportunity for other female athletes. She believes athletic merit and opportunity should be considered alongside inclusivity.
Tetart currently plays for Monaco in the French second division. Her case continues to elicit varying opinions on both sides of the debate.
