During Game 3 of the NBA Finals, San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama found himself under scrutiny for a forceful play against New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson. The incident occurred in the first half when Brunson and Wembanyama got entangled on offense. Brunson appeared to hold Wembanyama’s jersey, and in response, Wembanyama delivered a hard shove to Brunson’s neck and head. This action nearly sent Brunson to the court.
Though Brunson confronted Wembanyama, who seemed to dismiss the confrontation with laughter, the referees did not penalize or review the move for a flagrant foul. Despite the controversy, the Spurs secured a 115-111 victory at Madison Square Garden. Wembanyama’s actions drew criticism from commentators and former Knicks player Stephon Marbury.
In a video rant posted on X following Game 3, Marbury accused Wembanyama of playing “dirty,” reflecting styles seen in international play. He proposed that the Knicks retaliate in kind.
Marbury’s suggestion ignited discussions, with some analysts and teammates, like Jose Alvarado, discussing the possibility of retaliation in Game 4. Marbury’s heated comments echoed traditions encountered by the Knicks in their 2026 playoff appearances. Former Knicks stars such as Patrick Ewing and Walt “Clyde” Frazier also attended games, with Frazier being the only one to have secured championships for the Knicks in the 1970s.
However, Marbury’s advice faced criticism, especially given reports of Knicks fans clashing with Spurs supporters postgame. Game 4 of the NBA Finals will take place at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
