During a vacation in Venice, Italy, a U.S. couple found themselves in an unexpected situation. Julia Latoff and her boyfriend, Mike, were visiting Italy and Austria for his grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary. Their trip took a surprising twist during a stop in the historic city.
The Running Incident
Julia and Mike, both avid runners, decided to enjoy a run in Venice. Julia explained to Newsweek, “We both got into running post-college; it’s an individual sport backed by a supportive community.” They aimed to experience running in various cities, but this run in Venice brought new challenges.
Given the warm weather in July, Mike started running without a shirt, common practice during New York summers, where they reside. During a previous run in Florence, they had seen other shirtless runners, thinking little of it.
Venetian Regulations
As they ran through Venice, Julia noticed the negative reaction from onlookers. People seemed upset, which led the couple to investigate further on their phones. They soon learned that Venice has regulations against being shirtless in public areas, with fines reaching up to €250 ($290).
Authorities in Venice enforce this rule to encourage respectful behavior near cultural and religious sites. Other violations in Venice include eating or drinking while sitting on the ground and sitting on various public structures, all of which can lead to fines ranging from €25 to €500.
Swimming in canals is prohibited, resulting in a €350 fine, and littering brings similar penalties. Feeding birds, using bicycles, and camping in public spaces are also banned, subjecting offenders to significant fines and potential urban banning orders.
Learning From Mistakes
Julia and Mike, shocked upon realizing their mistake, quickly bought a shirt. Julia later shared their experience on Instagram, advising travelers, “If you are planning to travel to Venice, make sure you pack a running shirt!” Going forward, Mike remains cautious about running shirtless when traveling, even within the U.S.
