Democrats and media commentators face scrutiny over their response to Tulsi Gabbard’s resignation as Director of National Intelligence. This decision came after her husband received a cancer diagnosis.
During an appearance on Fox & Friends Weekend, Tony Kinnett, a national correspondent for The Daily Signal, criticized the political spin following the news. Kinnett described the response as revealing the character of those quick to criticize.
Gabbard’s resignation takes effect on June 30. In her resignation letter, which Fox News Digital accessed, she expressed gratitude for her role. She highlighted her husband’s battle with a rare bone cancer as a primary reason for stepping down.
“Tulsi Gabbard steps down from her position to focus on a personal family issue, and political punditry quickly turns to criticism,” Kinnett pointed out.
Gabbard, who served as Director since February 2025, is a U.S. Army Reserve officer and combat veteran. Previously, she was a long-term Congress member, aligning with the Democratic Party before turning independent, and eventually joining the Republicans.
The response to her resignation has drawn varied reactions. On CNN, guests criticized her tenure. Former Deputy DNI Beth Sanner, while expressing condolences, remarked that her title might as well have meant “Do Not Invite.” Such statements reflect a divisive political culture.
Some lawmakers echoed similar sentiments. Senator Adam Schiff commented on social media, stating her resignation was her only significant contribution to national security.
“The fast shift to politics in response to a personal crisis is troubling,” Kinnett observed.
Trump voiced support on Truth Social, appreciating her decision to prioritize her husband’s health. He acknowledged her contributions and expressed confidence in her future.
In her letter, Gabbard described her husband as her steady support over 11 years of marriage and noted her inability to let him face this alone while continuing in her demanding role.
