Cuban-American Lawmakers Address Crisis in Cuba
Cuban-American lawmakers expressed concern over Cuba’s worsening humanitarian and economic crisis, suggesting the island is nearing a collapse. They urged the Trump administration to seize the opportunity to pressure Havana, potentially reshaping the Western Hemisphere’s future.
Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., conveyed a message of hope to the Cuban people. He stated, “We have never been this close to seeing a change and this regime actually being ousted.” He pointed to the current U.S. leadership as supportive of their cause.
Joined by Reps. Maria Salazar and Mario Diaz-Balart, Gimenez participated in an interview on Fox News’ “My View with Lara Trump.” They discussed various issues including widespread blackouts, energy shortages, and the growing unrest in Cuba. They framed the situation as not only a humanitarian crisis but also a national security threat just 90 miles from the U.S. coast.
Salazar emphasized the proximity to Miami and the impact of past administrations. She noted that President Trump offers renewed hope. Diaz-Balart highlighted the threat to U.S. security posed by the Cuban regime, mentioning U.S. fugitives and drones capable of reaching American soil.
Diaz-Balart stated, “This president is not gonna continue to allow a regime 90 miles away that has drones that can hit the United States.” He referenced the recent commemoration of Americans killed by the Cuban regime, asserting only now, under Trump, has there been a willingness to act.
Salazar pointed to the administration’s focus on the Western Hemisphere, citing actions against Venezuela as evidence of a broader strategy. She credited Trump’s efforts in tackling hostile regimes in the region.
Throughout the discussions, lawmakers underscored their commitment to supporting the Cuban cause, confident in the current momentum toward change.
