U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, recently announced the imminent expulsion of a Cuban diplomat. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed the necessary paperwork following allegations that the Cuban official attempted to assault and shove an American diplomat.
During an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity, Waltz stated that the diplomat would depart for Cuba within 24 hours. Waltz declared, “He’s gone. He is going to be on a plane to Havana within the next 24 hours.” This decision arose from a contentious interaction between U.S. and Cuban representatives at the United Nations.
Waltz accused Cuban government officials of attempting to disrupt his speech. Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, he wrote, “The Castro regime has profited at the expense of the Cuban people with luxury cars, expensive watches, and a private island resort.” According to Waltz, regime affiliates attempted to interrupt his speech, with the ambassador asserting, “They can intimidate their own people in Cuba but think again.” In a video of the incident, Waltz can be heard demanding, “Back away from this podium, he’s not going to intimidate me.”
Tensions between Washington and Havana have been escalating, as U.S. officials accuse Cuban representatives of silencing criticism of their government. Newsweek reached out to Mike Waltz via email for further comments.
