The Tampa Bay Rays managed to stay in the game for another day, pulling off a dramatic two-run 13th inning to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in Game 4 of the World Series. The Brewers were within reach of their first World Series title after 22-year-old Cooper Pratt broke a long-standing 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the top of the 13th inning. The Brewers needed only three more outs for victory.
An error allowed Junior Caminero to reach base, rekindling hope for the Rays. Liam Hicks then hit a single, moving Caminero to third base. Jonny DeLuca followed with a single to center field, bringing in the tying run and revitalizing the crowd at Tropicana Field.
Chandler Simpson added to the anticipation by loading the bases. Finally, Ben Williamson, the last available player on the Rays’ bench, hit a pinch-hit single, sealing a crucial Game 4 win for Tampa Bay. This victory forced a Game 5 on Wednesday night.
Pratt seemed poised to be the hero, boasting a 4-for-5 performance that included an RBI double earlier in the game. However, his solo blast to left field did not secure the win. The Brewers last played in the World Series in 1982, losing to the St. Louis Cardinals. They entered this season with the best regular season record of 103-59 and were seeking to cap their memorable season with another sweep after eliminating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS.
Milwaukee’s only postseason loss before this match occurred in Game 3 of the ALDS against the San Diego Padres. Before Game 4, it felt essential for the Rays to strike first. Game 3 saw a disastrous eight-run fifth inning by the Brewers, leaving the Rays with a bitter defeat.
Simpson delivered for Tampa Bay with a double off Brewers starter Dustin May, scoring DeLuca for a 1-0 lead. Nonetheless, Pratt remained a threat, hitting a two-out double to tie the game. DeLuca’s effort to put the ball in play caused Brewers third baseman David Hamilton to make an error, giving the Rays a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.
Hamilton redeemed himself in the next inning with a solo home run off Griffin Jax, highlighting a mixed outing for Jax. Both teams relied heavily on their bullpens, sending the game into extra innings as neither let a run cross the plate.
Notably, Shane Drohan, who had been absent for a month, struggled against a determined Rays team eager to extend their season. As the series continues, anticipation builds for Game 5 between these competitive squads.
