The Dallas Cowboys currently hold a 3-4 record and trail the New York Giants, who lead the NFC East at 4-2-1. Following their 38-21 victory over a weakened Philadelphia Eagles team, the Cowboys have established themselves as the second-best team in their division. However, their roster lacks the necessary qualities to be considered championship material.
Key players like quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Javonte Williams, and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are delivering strong performances offensively. Yet, the Cowboys’ defense remains without a crucial game-changer needed for playoff success.
Market speculation suggests that Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones are actively searching for a key defensive player to enhance their squad. Former NFL quarterback and current CBS Sports analyst Russell Wilson believes that Jones should be targeting critical trades.
“If you’re (Jerry), I’m definitely making some trades,” Wilson said. “Who can I get? Who can make a difference for us? An edge pass-rusher like Maxx Crosby could be a significant addition. Jerry’s not afraid to spend.”
Previously, the Cowboys pursued Maxx Crosby during the offseason, but the Baltimore Ravens intervened, offering the Raiders two first-round picks for the Pro Bowl pass-rusher. The deal fell through as Crosby failed his physical, leading many to speculate that buyer’s remorse prompted the Ravens to withdraw from the agreement.
The Raiders are currently 3-4 and lag behind the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos in their division. Some analysts predict they may offload valuable players to gain more draft capital before the 2027 draft.
If the Cowboys see themselves as a single pass-rusher away from competing for a Super Bowl, trading first- and second-round picks could be a strategic move. However, Dallas already relinquished their 2027 first-round pick during the Quinnen Williams trade, which could complicate their pursuit of Crosby.
