Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has taken a stand on several contentious issues in an exclusive Fox News interview as the Texas Senate race heats up. Talarico supports banning gender surgeries for minors and opposes transgender men participating in women’s sports. With the race near its conclusion, both parties hope to secure a Senate majority, making Texas pivotal to their agendas.
Talarico is challenging Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican embroiled in controversies. A Republican defeat in this traditionally red state could impact former President Donald Trump’s ability to push his political aims.
During a campaign event at a food drive in Dallas, Talarico unequivocally stated his support for a national ban on gender surgery for minors. He explained that while he opposed a broader Texas bill, he had supported an amendment limiting the bill’s scope to banning surgeries for minors. Unfortunately, the amendment failed.
In 2023, as a Texas House Representative, Talarico voted against SB 14, a bill prohibiting gender surgery, puberty blockers, and hormone treatments for minors, supporting 18 Democratic proposed amendments, none of which passed.
Regarding transgender athletes in women’s sports, Talarico emphasized safety and fairness. He noted that he would oppose trans athletes in girls’ sports if it threatened these aspects. As a former teacher, he cares deeply about student athletes and their right to a fair competition.
Talarico also addressed his 2021 statement that “God is nonbinary,” acknowledging it was meant to be provocative. He explained his intention was to emphasize that human categories cannot define God.
When confronted about previous claims of six genders, Talarico admitted errors, stating there are two sexes, noting a small percentage of people have genetic abnormalities. He criticized opponents for focusing on these controversies rather than significant issues like high fuel costs.
Beyond personal revisions, Talarico critiqued the U.S. Supreme Court’s integrity, proposing an overhaul including binding conduct codes for justices and term limits.
The candidate aims to focus on affordability issues for Texans, highlighting struggles with basic needs like groceries, gas, and healthcare. He reiterated opposition to a Texas state income tax, though he previously voted against a measure permanently banning it, calling it government waste.
Talarico accused Paxton of being the “most corrupt politician” in Texas, expecting potential manipulation of his comments as a distraction tactic.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Paxton’s campaign for a statement.
