George W. Bush Remembers First Pitch at Yankee Stadium Post-9/11
Former President George W. Bush shared a memorable moment with New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter before throwing a ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Bush recounted this instance during an event at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, alongside his national security advisor at the time, Condoleezza Rice.
During the October 2001 World Series, Bush felt the immense responsibility of leading the nation during a crisis. Before the game, Jeter jokingly advised him, “Don’t bounce it, they’ll boo you.” This remark lightened the mood, and the audience at the event chuckled in response. Bush described the raw emotions he felt inside Yankee Stadium as he approached the pitcher’s mound.
I looked at the catcher, he looked really tiny, and the ball felt really heavy,” Bush said.
He remembered feeling the defiance of the American spirit in the stadium, with thoughts of resilience against adversity. Despite the pressure, his pitch successfully reached the catcher, making it a significant moment for him.
On the upcoming Friday, the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be observed. These attacks involved al-Qaeda terrorists hijacking four commercial planes and carrying out coordinated strikes on the United States. Two planes hit New York City’s Twin Towers, causing them to collapse and resulting in significant loss of life. Another plane hit the Pentagon, while a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania.
Nearly 3,000 people, including hundreds of emergency responders, perished in these tragic events.
