Democratic Senate Primary in Michigan Highlights Party Divisions
An intense and costly Democratic Senate primary in Michigan remains unresolved as of early Wednesday. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive former public health official, holds a narrow lead over Representative Haley Stevens, a moderate. This contest reflects the Democratic Party’s divisions over issues such as Israel. Prominent endorsements have poured in supporting either side. Michigan’s status as a battleground state could play a decisive role in the Senate’s control this fall.
Dr. El-Sayed’s lead, narrower than recent polls suggested, prompted both candidates to maintain optimism in their speeches after midnight. ‘We knew this was going to be a close race, and that’s exactly what we’ve got,’ said Ms. Stevens.
Dr. El-Sayed addressed supporters, acknowledging the contentious nature of the primary:
If I win, we will have taken $70 million on the chin and kept fighting back. Tomorrow, we begin to mend fences.
