Detroit Lions Training Camp: Jahmyr Gibbs’s Contract Situation

The Detroit Lions are facing a challenge as they commence their training camp. On Wednesday, running back Jahmyr Gibbs was absent from the opening practice session. Gibbs, at 24, is in a favorable position to seek a contract extension.

Lions coach Dan Campbell conveyed his thoughts, stating, “You guys know how we feel about Gibbs and all of our guys.” This comment was reported by The Athletic, emphasizing the ongoing negotiation.

“This will kind of continue. It’ll come as it comes. I think that’s the best way to say it,” Campbell added, explaining the situation as both sides navigate this process.

Jahmyr Gibbs reported to camp, yet he is not on the list for those unable to perform or those with non-football injuries. This suggests Gibbs is holding out to secure a new contract.

Since being drafted at No. 12 in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gibbs has been pivotal for the Lions. His rookie year was impressive, with 945 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns, and 316 receiving yards from 52 catches, alongside one receiving touchdown in 15 games.

The following season in 2024, Gibbs exceeded expectations by rushing for 1,412 yards and scoring 16 touchdowns, while catching 52 passes for 517 yards and four touchdowns.

In the most recent season, Gibbs managed an impressive turnout, starting in all 17 games. He accounted for 1,223 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns, and caught 77 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns. He achieved Pro Bowl selection in all three seasons of his NFL career.

Meanwhile, Atlanta Falcons’ Bijan Robinson also missed training camp due to contract negotiations, as reported by The Athletic.
