DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky recently defended herself against criticism for a social media post made after her ejection in a game against the Indiana Fever. Her post, “WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever,” came under scrutiny but Carrington has not clarified its intended meaning.
In a response to sports personality Emmanuel Acho, Carrington stated that her message was not about the foul’s assessment. “I’ve never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was white privilege (that was your assumption),” she replied on X. She emphasized her academic background, mentioning her education at Stanford and Baylor, where she studied topics relating to social issues.
Ongoing Debate and Reactions
The reason behind Carrington’s mention of “white privilege” remains unclear. She has not confirmed if the comment targeted Sophie Cunningham, who was involved in the incident, or the Indiana Fever as an organization.
After her ejection, which resulted from a flagrant foul on Cunningham, the WNBA has not announced any disciplinary action. Cunningham, who has recently been part of a debate about transgender athletes in women’s sports, confronted Carrington after the foul. This incident added tension to an already charged atmosphere, as rallies took place outside the United Center.
Previous Controversies Involving Carrington
This isn’t Carrington’s first controversy involving the Fever. In 2024, while with the Connecticut Sun, she had a conflict with Caitlin Clark, accusing her of flopping and calling Fever fans “the nastiest fans in the W.” Another incident involved accidental contact that left Clark with a black eye, leading to more criticism.
