Legacy of Michael ‘Ace’ Allegretti: A Baker Remembered

Michael ‘Ace’ Allegretti, known for his exceptional Italian confections at Allegretti’s Bakery in Norridge, passed away at 74. He leaves behind a legacy of sweetness and generosity. Allegretti worked up to his last day at the bakery located at 7717 W. Lawrence Avenue, a beloved spot for locals for over six decades.

Allegretti’s commitment to his craft, formed after serving as a cook in the U.S. Army during World War II, led him to start the bakery in Chicago. The family plans to continue running the bakery, preserving his memory through the cherished recipes and traditions he established.

Alongside his family, Ace made Allegretti’s Bakery a go-to destination for Italian treats like cannoli, sfogliatelle, and pasticciotto. They only use the freshest ingredients, providing not just delicious pastries but also warm hospitality.

‘Mike was the most generous person in the world,’ his sister Linda Ahern shared. His dedication to the bakery and community drew over 3,000 condolence messages online. In his honor, the Norridge Police Department will escort traffic during his funeral services.

Affectionately nicknamed by his father, Ace was famous for his chocolate donuts, appearing on TV shows like Chicago Fire and WGN-TV’s Chicago’s Very Own. His creations, such as cupcakes and Italian cookies, delighted many. Despite missing ingredients in inherited recipes, Ace and his family perfected their father’s formulas, leading to a bakery expansion.

Longtime customer Angela Vitale reminisces about Ace’s artistic pastry skills and generous nature. He created cakes and provided familial warmth, especially to those who worked at the bakery. Angela’s family was embraced by Ace, who treated them with kindness.

Linda Ahern recalls Ace’s love for children, his Santa Claus appearances, and how he brought joy to young relatives. Ace’s generous spirit extended through such actions, marking memorable moments for many families.

Vitale fondly remembers Ace greeting her when she visited the bakery, his care and warmth leaving an indelible mark. His passing is a great loss to those who knew him, as expressed by Vitale’s touching reflection on their friendship.

Michael ‘Ace’ Allegretti’s wake is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W. Lawrence Avenue, Norridge. His funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Eugene Catholic Church, 7958 W. Foster Ave., Chicago.
