Dodgers Edge Braves Amid Thrilling Division Series
The Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Atlanta Braves in a gripping division series. Through three games, both teams showcased their talents in a tightly contested matchup.
The Early Lead
The Dodgers began with a strong 5-1 advantage, thanks to home runs from Teoscar Hernandez, Kyle Tucker, and Max Muncy. However, the Braves retaliated late in the 9th inning, with Ozzie Albies hitting a two-run homer. This set the stage for competitive follow-up games.
Game Two Setup and Surprise
In the second game, the Braves made a strategic decision to rest Chris Sale, opting for a bullpen game with Ray Kerr opening. The Dodgers countered with Blake Snell, a two-time Cy Young winner. Despite expectations, Kerr impressed with solid pitching and reliever Didier Fuentes excelled, allowing one run over 3.2 innings.
Snell struggled with command, walking five batters but limited damage to one run. Atlanta capitalized on Dodgers’ errors, with Michael Harris II turning a misplayed ball into a triple. He then scored on a wild pitch and contributed to another run in the 7th inning. The Braves evened the series 1-1 as Max Muncy’s late homer could not spark a comeback.
Pivotal Game Three
The crucial third game was set in Atlanta with Chris Sale returning to face World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Sale had dominated the Dodgers earlier in the season but faced challenges early on due to his high pitch count.
Yamamoto, in contrast, maintained control, delivering a standout performance. In the third inning, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman nearly scored, but a stunning play from Mauricio Dubon kept them at bay. The Dodgers eventually broke through in the fourth inning with Andy Pages leading, and Kike Hernandez hitting a two-run homer for a 2-0 lead.
Freeman added another home run, extending the Dodgers’ lead. While Atlanta rallied briefly in the 5th inning, Yamamoto overcame the threat, finishing with one run allowed and 10 strikeouts over seven innings.
9th Inning Drama
As the game neared its end, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts made a bold decision to use Edwin Diaz despite potential risks. Diaz, with a shaky regular season performance, faced immediate pressure but managed to secure the win. Ozzie Albies hit a lead-off double, but Diaz held the Braves scoreless, finishing the game.
The Dodgers now have an upper hand, with Tyler Mahle expected to start game four. Their goal is to finish the series without returning to LA, setting up their pitchers for the NLCS. Meanwhile, the Braves need more from their lineup, with a potential game five bringing Sale back into play.
The series promises more excitement as both teams vie for supremacy.
