A dog reportedly triggered a shotgun inside a truck at a Nebraska gas station, causing a blast that injured a nearby woman. The incident occurred Saturday at Short Stop, a gas station and convenience store on Avenue I, according to local reports citing Nebraska authorities.
The situation unfolded shortly after noon. The vehicle pulled into the gas station, where the truck owner entered the store. A second passenger exited but remained near the front passenger-side door. During this time, the dog moved inside the rear seat area and came into contact with the shotgun, which had a live round in the chamber, resulting in the firearm’s discharge.
The blast traveled through the vehicle’s front passenger-side door and struck a woman who was stopped at a nearby traffic light, several yards away. Police stated that a shotgun pellet hit the upper part of her right arm as she rested it out of her car window. Her injuries were not life-threatening, and a family member took her to Regional West Medical Center for treatment.
No other injuries were reported. Initially, police were informed that the incident involved a BB gun, but later discoveries confirmed the use of a shotgun. The Scottsbluff Police Department noted damage to the vehicle’s passenger-side door consistent with a shotgun discharge.
The Police Department is continuing to investigate the accident. They are working to fully understand how the dog triggered the shotgun.
