A skydiver died on Sunday after a reported midair collision with another jumper near Colville, northeast of Washington state, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO). The tragic incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. during a scheduled group jump comprising multiple participants.
According to ACSO, several staff members witnessed the event as the victim became unresponsive during the descent. A Facebook post from ACSO confirmed the incident occurred at West Plains Skydiving, involving two jumpers.
Lance Rosenfield captured an image of two skydivers launching parachutes during a previous jump on June 28, 2026, highlighting the risks involved. ACSO reported that the collision led to the death of one skydiver, while the second person sustained injuries requiring medical treatment.
The deceased was identified as Randy Hubbs from Kennewick, Washington. Nicole Klein from Colville suffered injuries in the collision.
The staff monitored Hubbs from about 500 feet above the ground post-collision. Preliminary findings reveal Hubbs became unresponsive after impacting Klein. Witnesses noted his head and arms went limp, indicating incapacitation and lack of control over his parachute canopy.
The victim reportedly drifted away from the designated drop zone, vanishing beyond a northeastern hill. Adams County Dispatch received medical emergency reports in the 2000 block of E. Schoessler Road for two injured skydivers.
Deputies arrived and investigated the scene. Hubbs was subsequently released to the Adams County Coroner’s Office. Officials stated weather conditions appeared not to contribute to the incident.
West Plains Skydiving confirmed both jumpers were experienced, using personal equipment. Hubbs had completed over 800 jumps, and Klein approximately 900.
ASCO expressed condolences to those affected, acknowledging the personal toll of the event. The investigation is ongoing.
