Drone Explodes Near Gas Pipeline in Bulgaria, Raising Security Concerns
A drone carrying explosives entered Bulgaria from Romania and exploded near an international gas pipeline on Saturday. This incident prompted increased surveillance along the border shared by the two NATO members.
The explosion occurred shortly after 5 a.m., about 330 feet inside Bulgarian territory. Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported the blast took place in a sunflower field near Kardam village. It was around 200 meters from a Romanian compressor station and 1 kilometer from Bulgaria’s station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline.
Authorities confirmed no casualties or infrastructure damage, and they secured the area while investigating. The pipeline connects Turkey with Ukraine through the Balkans.
Initial findings on the drone’s origin were unclear, though Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry suggested it might be a Maya decoy drone, commonly used by Ukrainian armed forces. The ministry stated the incident likely wasn’t intentional.
Neither Bulgaria nor Romania detected the drone prior to its explosion. Romania’s Defense Ministry hadn’t registered an aerial target crossing to Bulgaria. To address security, Prime Minister Radev announced Bulgaria would enhance border surveillance and relocate anti-drone equipment from the Turkish border to the Romanian frontier. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov mentioned plans to raise the issue at a NATO North Atlantic Council meeting soon.
The blast size and smoke volume suggested the drone carried a substantial amount of explosives. Stoyanov noted these drones are challenging to detect due to their small size and low flight paths.
The Importance of the Trans-Balkan Pipeline
The Trans-Balkan pipeline links gas networks between Turkey and Ukraine via Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova. It allows gas flow in both directions, offering a potential supply channel for Ukraine and other Eastern European nations.
The explosion’s proximity to the Negru Vodă-Kardam interconnection point, a link between Bulgarian and Romanian systems, highlighted the route’s significance. Officials confirmed no damage occurred to the pipeline.
This pipeline has gained strategic importance in diversifying regional energy supplies. It provides Ukraine access to southern Europe’s gas, including liquefied natural gas through Greece. Gas network operators from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine have offered route capacity for northward deliveries to Ukraine.
Russia Intensifies Strikes on Ukraine
Russia launched six ballistic missiles and over 150 drones targeting Ukraine overnight, resulting in four deaths in Kyiv and nearby areas. Ukrainian authorities stated air defenses intercepted 135 drones, but the ballistic missiles evaded defenses.
Among the deceased were a 3-year-old boy and his grandparents in Kyiv’s Brovary district. Another fatality occurred in the capital. President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concerns over Patriot missile shortages, essential for defense against Russian ballistic attacks. He called for international support and harsher sanctions on Russia while seeking approval and aid to manufacture more interceptors locally.
Ukraine’s response included long-range drone attacks on oil refineries in Russia’s Krasnodar and Samara regions. Kyiv argues that targeting Russia’s energy sector disrupts financial and supply chains aiding Moscow’s military efforts.
