Shifting Trends Among Independents
Independent voters are increasingly shifting away from President Donald Trump, based on data from several key polling series. YouGov/Economist, Fox News, and Echelon Insights highlight declining support in areas like job approval, economic management, and immigration policy. This trend poses a potential risk for the Republican Party as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
Independent Voters: A Key Factor
Independents often tip the scales in close elections. Their current tilt away from the GOP, just short of 100 days before Election Day, may influence the Congressional power dynamics. Republican candidates, especially in competitive races, might confront a challenging environment if these trends hold.
Polling Data and Insights
The trend across four main areas—overall job approval, economic approval, immigration approval, and national sentiment—shows independents growing more critical of Trump since his second term began.
The Fox News poll, conducted from July 17-20, included 1,003 registered voters, with a margin of error of 3 percentage points. The Economist/YouGov survey included 1,602 adult citizens, with a 3.3 percentage point margin of error. Additionally, the Echelon Insights July survey involved 1,004 likely voters and had a 3.6 percentage point margin of error.
Rising Pessimism About the Country’s Direction
Among independents, feelings about the country’s direction have turned negative. In January 2025, 27% told YouGov the country was heading the right way, while 56% disagreed. By July 2026, this fell to 13% seeing the country on the right path against 72% disagreeing. Echelon Insights had similar findings, seeing optimism fall from 30% to 17% during the same period.
Independent Approval Gap
Trump’s approval rating among independents has dropped. YouGov/Economist reports net approval plummeting from negative 4 points in January 2025 to negative 50 points by July 2026. Fox News and Echelon Insights show similar declines, with net approval at negative 42 and negative 51 points, respectively, by July 2026.
Declining Economic Support
Trump’s previously strong economic approval has eroded among independents. YouGov/Economist data shows a shift from positive 8 points in early 2025 to negative 50 by mid-2026. Echelon Insights and Fox News found net approval worsening similarly.
Immigration Support Weakens
Support for Trump’s immigration policies, although stronger relative to the economy, has also declined. YouGov/Economist reports a drop from positive 10 points to negative 31 points. Echelon Insights and Fox News echo this downward trend.
Democratic Advantage Grows
Polls indicate growing Democratic support among independents. The YouGov congressional tracker shows independents preferred Democrats by 33% to 25% initially, which shifted to 44% to 22%, a 22-point lead by July 2026. This trend is reflected in national averages, with Democrats holding a 5.4-point lead. An Emerson College poll also noted Democrats leading substantially by July 2026.
Potential Impact in Midterms
Though these indicators do not guarantee Republican losses, they suggest a consistent narrative: critical views toward Trump among independents have intensified without signs of reversal. Success in tight races often requires support from the center.
Davis Ingle, a spokesperson for the White House, contests this interpretation, asserting Trump’s ongoing achievements domestically and internationally.
