Zelenskyy Visits UK to Reinforce Support Amid Escalating Tensions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet British Prime Minister Andy Burnham at a naval base in England. The visit aims to emphasize the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine, Burnham stated.
Zelenskyy’s visit marks the first by a foreign leader since Burnham assumed office last week. Burnham follows Keir Starmer, the previous prime minister, who visited Kyiv shortly before leaving office. He is the fifth British prime minister to engage with Zelenskyy since the 2022 Russian invasion.
Burnham declared a firm stance against Russia, aiming for a lasting peace in Ukraine. Previously serving as mayor of Greater Manchester, he has limited foreign policy experience.
During the visit, Zelenskyy and Burnham will meet over 200 Ukrainian military personnel undergoing training in Britain. This exercise enhances skills in warfare and countermine measures focused on the Black Sea. Additionally, the UK plans to share the “Stone Cloak” electronic warfare system’s intellectual property with Ukraine. This system prevents drone detection.
Ukraine intensifies its drone strikes on Russia, targeting oil facilities, military factories, and logistical centers. These strikes challenge Russian President Vladimir Putin’s depiction of the conflict as irrelevant to ordinary Russians. Despite this, Russia increases aerial attacks on Ukraine.
Recent Russian strikes caused a fire at a shopping center in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Ukrainian air force reported intercepting or jamming 123 out of 147 Russian strike drones overnight.
In Zaporizhzhia, attacks resulted in one death and injuries to two others. High-rise buildings and private residences suffered damage. In the Nikopol district, Russian strikes damaged a kindergarten and other infrastructure, injuring a woman and a child.
Moscow reported shooting down 276 Ukrainian drones overnight. In Rostov-on-Don, a Ukrainian drone attack killed a family couple and injured five others. In Belgorod, another drone attack injured 12 people, including children.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed Ukraine attacked an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, killing a sailor. Araghchi condemned the attack in a statement, alleging U.S. and Israeli influence.
Zelenskyy acknowledged successful long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea. These targeted vessels connected to military cargo linked to Iran, along with a warship.
