Recent findings suggest a trend among homeowners who are rapidly paying off their mortgages despite having low interest rates. Christopher Price, a financial planner, advises that individuals with mortgages interest rates of 2.5 percent should take their time in repaying, maximizing the financial benefits. Yet, this advice is not broadly followed.
Rocket Mortgage has provided intriguing data, revealing that about 25% of homeowners are speeding up their mortgage payments. This statistic is drawn from an extensive analysis of early payments on almost 3 million loans by Rocket Mortgage across all states during the last five years.
Notably, those who would reap the greatest benefits from taking their time with payments—people with lower interest rates—are not following this approach as expected.
“Financially speaking, if I have a 2.5 percent mortgage, I would rather pay them as slowly and as long as I can,” Christopher Price explained.
Rocket Mortgage’s data indicates a mismatch between the optimal financial strategy and current homeowner behaviors. Despite lower rates offering a clear advantage in holding off payments, a significant number still accelerate their mortgage pay-offs.
