A man driving recklessly led San Diego police on a chaotic pursuit that ended on a bustling beach, shocking onlookers. Officers arrested the suspect on Sunday morning after a series of pursuits starting from the Pacific Beach neighborhood.
The San Diego Police Department received several calls around 7:30 a.m. reporting the reckless behavior. Witnesses described a tan or gold Nissan Frontier performing dangerous maneuvers such as driving donuts in parking lots and narrowly missing other vehicles.
They saw him almost hitting curbs and crashing into a retaining wall,
police reported.
Officers quickly arrived and spotted the truck heading towards the ocean. An officer initiated a traffic stop attempt, but the driver fled, igniting a chase.
“Flaunting disregard for safety,” is how police described the driver’s actions.
The pursuit was shut down due to the erratic nature of the driver’s conduct. However, officers discovered the truck later, leading to another chase attempt, also called off.
Police identified the vehicle as involved in felony evading charges. An intensive search began, aiming to locate the driver again.
Later, officers spotted the Nissan moving slowly. They paused further attempts pending aerial support from department’s ABLE helicopter. The helicopter tracked the truck as it drove onto the beach.
Beachgoers watched in surprise as officers approached the driver. Identified as Griffin Charles Foy, 25, he exited the vehicle with hands raised in surrender. A police K-9 was present but not actively used.
“Due to the serious alleged offenses and public safety concerns, a high-risk vehicle stop was necessary,” authorities explained.
No injuries occurred during the chase. Foy remains charged with felony evasion, obstructing or resisting an officer, and driving under drug influence. He was booked at the San Diego Central Jail.
