Recent body camera footage captures a dramatic encounter between Maryland police officers and a suspected carjacker. The incident involved an alleged suspect who drove toward officers and collided with multiple vehicles, including striking an officer before the police opened fire.
The Anne Arundel County police were dispatched on May 7, around 9 p.m., to North Crain Highway and 11th Avenue in Glen Burnie following a report of a hit-and-run. Upon arrival, officers found that Jasmin L. Cooper, 28, had crashed her car into another vehicle. She then forcibly took a vehicle from a family member who had come to assist her.
Cooper was subsequently located in the 8500 block of Severn. The body cam footage shows officers directing her to exit the car, demanding she turn off the vehicle. Although she raised her hands briefly, Cooper did not comply with their commands.
“So what, she stole her son’s car?” one officer questioned during the intense scene.
Moments later, Cooper sped off, leading officers to scramble out of her way as she accelerated. The police reported that she drove toward them, hitting an officer, two patrol cars, and another vehicle, which resulted in police firing their weapons and wounding her.
Further responding officers tracked Cooper to Reece Road, where she caused another collision at Reece Road and Telegraph Road. She then attempted to commandeer an occupied vehicle, which led to her apprehension by law enforcement.
The video reveals Cooper lying on the ground in handcuffs. Officers swiftly administered first aid, bandaging her wound after the shooting. Jasmin L. Cooper faces charges including carjacking, attempted carjacking, multiple counts of reckless endangerment, and first- and second-degree assault.
Both Cooper and the officer struck by her vehicle received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
