Escalating Drone Attacks In Russia And Ukraine’s Response
Ukraine launched hundreds of drones across Russia on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least six people. This represents one of Kyiv’s most extensive aerial assaults of the conflict. Kyiv has intensified its operations against Russia this year, deploying long-range missiles and swarms of drones targeting military and energy infrastructures. Additionally, significant Wildberries depots in Russia have been targeted, destroying merchandise valued at billions, bringing the war closer to Russian civilians nearly 4.5 years into the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
However, Ukraine is also experiencing Russian assaults, as drone strikes have destroyed homes and damaged Kyiv’s significant book market.
Drone Attacks and Their Consequences
Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced the destruction of 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. About 600 drones were headed for Moscow, with local defenses taking down a third of them, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. An 83-year-old man died after a drone struck his private home in the Moscow region. Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that a Ukrainian attack induced a fire at a Wildberries warehouse in Podolsk. In a related incident, a drone assault in Russia’s southwestern Rostov region killed five people and sparked a forest fire, confirmed by local Governor Yury Slyusar.
Impact of Russian Strikes on Ukraine
In Ukraine, a Russian missile attack on Kryvyi Rih resulted in the death of two people and wounded 14 others, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on social media. Another fatality occurred in the city of Sumy. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, the largest steel producer, reported a hit on one of its sites, partially halting operations. Additionally, a man and woman were killed when their home was targeted in Zaporizhzhia, as per Ivan Fedorov, the local military administration leader.
Russian drone attacks across Kyiv caused fires, injuring six individuals. A significant blaze consumed one of the city’s largest book markets near Pochaina metro station, leaving clouds of smoke over Kyiv as firefighters worked through the remains. President Zelenskyy lamented that, where possible, Russian forces target civilian structures with ballistic missiles.
Ukrainian Counteroffensive and Missile Usage
Russia’s Ministry of Defense on Sunday pointed to targeting a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and various military-industrial sites in Kyiv, including a manufacturing unit for Flamingo missiles. These domestically produced missiles are pivotal to Ukraine’s long-range military strategies, with Zelenskyy recently declaring a successful strike on a rocket research center in Samara, approximately 900 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
NATO’s Response to Airspace Violations
Romania’s Ministry of National Defense reported that a Spanish F-18 jet intercepted and downed a drone identified in Romanian airspace, detected early Sunday by surveillance near the border with Moldova. Officials found additional debris in the Black Sea near Constanta. Romania has experienced numerous drone incidents since Russia’s invasion, with Spanish forces escalating their presence to fortify the Eastern Flank.
Romania’s acting Foreign Minister, Oana Toiu, mentioned on social media that Spain has responded to Romania and NATO’s call to strengthen defense, in response to previous drone encounters.
