The European Union has announced an ambitious plan to lessen its reliance on technology from the United States. This initiative aims to bolster the region’s data centers, semiconductors, and cloud computing capabilities. The plan, unveiled by European Union officials, is a response to increasing concerns about the potential risks posed by dependency on American tech, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions with the Trump administration.
Central to the plan is enhancing government involvement in the European tech industry. This includes accelerating the development of data centers and revitalizing the semiconductor sector. It also encourages European governments and businesses to procure technology from domestic suppliers, emphasizing areas critical to security.
European leaders express concerns that reliance on American technology could introduce vulnerabilities. This dependency is likened to a ‘kill switch’ that future U.S. administrations might leverage to restrict access to crucial tech services.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, emphasized the importance of technological independence. She highlighted that essential services like hospitals, energy grids, and security need to be safeguarded by reducing reliance on external technologies.
The technology sovereignty package may exacerbate tensions with the Trump administration, given past disputes over trade, the war in Ukraine, and territorial claims over Greenland. Jamieson Greer, the U.S. trade representative, has previously hinted at possible retaliatory actions concerning Europe’s digital policies.
European officials are working towards solidifying a trade agreement with the United States, with President Trump urging completion by July 4. The European Parliament is expected to vote on the sovereignty package in mid-June, directly before this deadline.
