Hanover Central pitcher, sophomore Jillian DeYoung, understands the difference between regular season and playoff games. Senior catcher Sienna Stilley, committed to Jacksonville State, often reminds her of this distinction.
“Every warmup in the postseason, she gets frustrated,” Stilley said. “I tell her to relax, as it’s not the game yet. Then, during the game, she is composed and mature beyond her years.”
DeYoung recently proved her prowess in the Class 3A Hanover Central Regional with a 5-0 win over Griffith. She allowed just one hit, struck out ten, and walked two, perfect through four innings.
Her impact wasn’t limited to the mound. DeYoung went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, helping Hanover Central secure their third regional title in four years. They reached the state championships last year and now move forward to face No. 2 Logansport in the Twin Lakes Semistate semifinals.
“I’ve looked forward to this moment. Our team is confident and stress-free, which makes it fun,” DeYoung shared.
In her recent game, DeYoung described her team’s defense as a “brick wall.” Griffith’s Laney Poppa finally reached base by a walk in the fifth inning, marking their first runner.
Hanover Central’s head coach, Sam Antkiewicz, praised DeYoung. “Griffith is strong, and DeYoung brought her ‘A’ game. She loves these high-stakes situations.”
Beyond pitching, DeYoung’s bat was vital. After a single that contributed to a two-run first inning, she delivered a two-run single in the second.
“The hard work paid off. We focused on our at-bats, especially against fast pitcher Camryn Young,” said DeYoung.
Antkiewicz wasn’t surprised by DeYoung’s contributions at the plate. “She provides crucial hits. When needed, she steps up and makes a difference.”
Previously, DeYoung missed a game against Griffith due to shoulder discomfort after a shutout win. She spoke about staying focused and giving their all this time. “We were determined and locked in for this game.”
This season, DeYoung has a record of 18-4 with a 1.35 ERA, 224 strikeouts, and 40 walks over 130 innings. She’s batting .360 with three home runs and 31 RBIs. Last year, as a freshman, she recorded a 7-7 record, 1.88 ERA, 165 strikeouts, and four homers.
Antkiewicz noted DeYoung’s growth. “She has become stronger and learned to manage her body through the season. She’s peaking again at the right time.”
