By May 25, 2026, fifty thousand residents in Southern California were under evacuation orders due to a chemical threat at an aerospace facility in Garden Grove. Emergency teams worked to prevent a tank holding methyl methacrylate (MMA) from exploding. Although officials believed they had made progress, they acknowledged that the threat remained.
Evacuation and Resident Impact
The evacuation affected entire neighborhoods over Memorial Day weekend. Authorities warned that a worst-case explosion could trigger further blasts. Displaced residents faced challenges and uncertainty.
Jackie Urquiza evacuated with her young son, expressing concerns over lack of clothing and medication. She was unaware of the nearby chemical storage. “We don’t know how much longer it’ll be,” she remarked, highlighting the difficulties faced as a single mother unable to work. Another evacuee, Andrea Luna, described her situation as “devastating,” noting the uncertainty and time spent sleeping in a parking lot.
Quick evacuations left some residents unprepared. Pavel Ramirez-Tellez had to leave without proper footwear, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Progress in Containment Efforts
Emergency teams made progress by inspecting the tank and identifying a crack that could release pressure. By Monday morning, temperatures had stabilized, dropping from 100 to 93 degrees. Despite this, officials acknowledged the potential for an explosion due to unexplored risks within the chemical core.
The threat of a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE) was ruled out. However, interim Chief TJ McGovern cautioned that other explosion risks remained due to rising internal temperatures.
Company Apology and Ongoing Investigation
GKN Aerospace issued an apology for the disruption, expressing awareness of the incident’s impact on the local community. The company had faced environmental violations in the past, paying nearly $1 million in 2021.
Methyl methacrylate is used in producing clear plastics and glass substitutes. Although stable MMA is safe, it poses toxic hazards when compromised. Elias Picazo, a chemistry professor, warned about potential health effects like dizziness and respiratory irritation.
Authorities reported no toxic release into the environment. The Environmental Protection Agency found no evidence of chemical leaks despite the tank’s crack. The cause of the failure is still under investigation, with at least two class-action lawsuits already filed.
Future Uncertain
The precise timeline for resident return remains unknown as safety protocols limit responder numbers in the evacuation zone. Among key priorities are the safety of firefighters and the public. Operations continue to be conducted with strategic care.
