The annual Hajj pilgrimage, a central practice in Islam, commenced in Mecca on Monday. Over 1.5 million pilgrims have journeyed to Saudi Arabia from various countries, according to Saleh bin Saad Al-Murabba of the Hajj passport forces. These arrivals happen against the backdrop of a tentative ceasefire involving Iran and regional tensions.
Participants of Hajj, including Egyptian pilgrim Samya Abdul Moneim, express deep gratitude for partaking in the pilgrimage. Attending Hajj is a significant religious duty for Muslims who are financially and physically capable. Abdul Moneim shared her feelings of blessing and happiness upon reaching Mecca.
On the first day, many pilgrims make their way to a vast tent city in the nearby desert. Prior to this, they perform the Tawaf by circling the Kaaba at the Grand Mosque, enduring high temperatures. Hajj is a profound spiritual journey offering spiritual cleansing and forgiveness over several days. Youssef Chouhoud, an academic from Virginia, described the experience as a ‘hard reset,’ hoping to gain renewed purpose and discipline.
Approximately 1.6 million Muslims gathered in Mecca on Sunday before the pilgrimage began. The process is demanding, with many pilgrims finding it among the toughest challenges they face. However, some draw inspiration from seeing others’ sacrifices and charitable actions throughout the journey, which they hope will be accepted by God.
During the Hajj, many face intense heat, utilizing umbrellas and handheld fans for relief. Volunteers distribute water to keep everyone hydrated, offering fine mists of water as added comfort.
Concurrently, President Donald Trump mentioned that a pact with Iran regarding the war and the Strait of Hormuz is nearing completion. The agreement, called a ‘Memorandum of Understanding for PEACE,’ awaits final approval. Meanwhile, worldwide fuel costs have surged due to tensions, increasing travel expenses for many pilgrims.
In Indonesia, contingency plans were emphasized for travelers to avoid additional costs. India’s planning proceeded, though high fuel prices affected travel expenses. Reopening the strait could alleviate the global energy crisis exacerbated by the ongoing conflict.
In Saudi Arabia, continuous rituals have been observed as pilgrims arrive. On Tuesday, a significant moment of the pilgrimage will take place at Arafat, where pilgrims seek forgiveness and divine blessings.
