Evacuation orders remain in place for over 40,000 residents in Garden Grove, California, due to an unstable tank containing toxic chemicals.
Recent updates from Orange County fire officials indicate that while the threat of a major explosion has been eliminated, there is still a risk of minor explosions. TJ McGovern, interim fire chief of the Orange County Fire Authority, emphasized at a news conference that the evacuation zones must remain active despite the reduced threat.
The tank could still leak or experience a smaller explosion, as highlighted in a separate interview with KTLA. As authorities evaluate safety, residents near the industrial site are advised to remain evacuated.
Officials revealed that the tank’s pressure relief and lowered internal temperatures are positive signs. On Sunday, firefighters took additional steps by removing insulation from the 22-year-old tank to expedite cooling efforts. The Environmental Protection Agency warns that exposure to the chemical methyl methacrylate can irritate eyes and skin and cause breathing difficulties.
Authorities issued evacuation orders on Friday after noticing dangerous signs, such as increased temperature and bulging of the tank. After detecting a crack that relieved internal pressure, temperatures decreased from 100 to 93 degrees, providing some relief. Despite this progress, residents cannot return home until safety is assured.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office stated that it is investigating GKN Aerospace, the company responsible for the site. GKN produces components for military and civilian aircraft, including jet engines and landing gear.
