The New York Knicks are on a winning streak, close to reaching the N.B.A. Finals for the first time in over 25 years. Inside Madison Square Garden, the atmosphere is electric as the team secures its tenth consecutive playoff victory. However, outside the arena, the scene has been quite different.
The police have reported increasing disorder during celebrations following the Knicks’ recent home games. After the last game on Thursday, six individuals were arrested. Conflicts broke out, and fans breached police barriers, even resorting to throwing glass. An estimated 6,000 people gathered to celebrate, but the festivities turned unruly. Such celebrations are not new, but their intensity and occasional violence have grown, leading to serious concerns.
Due to these problems, New York City has decided to cancel the gatherings outside the Garden. This decision has disappointed many fans, who view these celebrations as a time-honored tradition. They blame the disruptions on what they consider ‘fake fans’ who exploit the chaos to generate viral content. These individuals use lively scenes outside the Garden for their own purposes, overshadowing genuine Knicks supporters.
One such example of viral content comes from Sidetalk, a well-known platform for street interviews. About five years ago, they filmed a video featuring fans exuberantly celebrating a Knicks victory over the Boston Celtics. Though some moments were too crude to be shared widely, the video introduced the phrase ‘Bing Bong’, shouted by a fan named Jordie Bloom. This term, mimicking the sound of subway doors closing, became an internet sensation. It has been viewed over 6 million times on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, becoming a catchphrase among fans.
While postgame celebrations are usual in professional sports, this viral video seems to have amplified the atmosphere outside Madison Square Garden. Fans and insiders acknowledge that it has played a significant role in the heightened excitement, drawing more crowds than in previous years.
