DOJ Withdraws Subpoenas in Leak Probe

The Justice Department has withdrawn subpoenas against New York Times journalists as part of a leak investigation. The DOJ had initially sought grand jury testimonies and phone records from journalists Tyler Pager, Julian Barnes, Eric Schmitt, and Eric Lipton. These journalists reported Trump’s decision to fly back from Turkey on the older Air Force One instead of the Qatar-donated jet amid security concerns. Trump denied these reports.

“Today’s proceeding was an important affirmation of our country’s commitment to a free press,” stated David McCraw of the New York Times. “We are pleased that the government conceded that the subpoenas violated the law.”

Critics argue that the subpoenas infringed on First Amendment rights. The DOJ initially argued that the subpoenas were necessary due to the leaking of national security information.

Upon leaving the NATO summit in Turkey, President Trump used his older Air Force One. Reports suggest this was due to U.S.-Iran military tensions, although Trump dismissed security concerns. He claimed the Mildenhall stop was to allow service members to see the new aircraft.
