Supermassive Games has aimed to recreate the unique storytelling experience of their 2015 hit, “Until Dawn.” This game was known for its dynamic narrative where players’ choices determined the fate of the characters. In 2019, the studio launched “The Dark Pictures Anthology.” Over four years, they released four games, each exploring a different horror genre. Although these titles maintained high production values and a branching narrative, they didn’t capture the same level of success as “Until Dawn.” For fans, however, they provided new thrilling adventures regularly.
After concluding the first season of “The Dark Pictures,” Supermassive paused the series. Now it returns with “Directive 8020,” signaling a new chapter. While the game lacks “The Dark Pictures Anthology” branding, it signifies the next phase. The Curator, a familiar presence, makes a minor appearance. The game continues to challenge players to keep five characters alive in a horror setting. “Directive 8020” introduces fresh mechanics and twists aiming to redefine the series.
This time, the player is thrown into a space setting. Earth’s condition drives humans to seek new planets. Players command the crew of the Cassiopeia, tasked with preparing a path for a colonization ship, Andromeda. The plot unfolds in deep space, blending elements from “The Thing” and “Alien.” While the story borrows from familiar narratives, a surprising twist later reshapes perceptions in a clever manner.
Despite being somewhat predictable, “Directive 8020” remains engaging. Supermassive excels in delivering scares, ensuring the player stays on edge. The Quick Time Events (QTE) create genuine tension, as any misstep can permanently kill a character. Even if parts feel familiar, playing through with real consequences heightens the experience.
Two major changes enhance the formula. Players gain more control during non-QTE parts, allowing complete camera rotation. This increases the engagement and intimacy of exploring environments. On the downside, forced stealth sections are frequently unwelcome; they occur often and lack significant challenge. Once the low risk of failure becomes apparent, these parts lose tension.
Another addition is the ability to rewind and alter decisions. This makes navigating the branching narrative simpler and more enjoyable. It’s an optional feature, but during initial playthroughs, it’s advised to avoid rewinding to keep the experience intact. For those eager to explore different outcomes or uncover all narratives, this feature proves invaluable.
For the first time, “Directive 8020” is exclusive to current-gen platforms. It uses Unreal Engine 5, looking impressive on the PS5 Pro. While offering various frame rate options, it’s recommended to play at 60 FPS for a smooth experience. However, the disparity between great voice performances and the character animations can be jarring, diminishing the cinematic immersion.
Overall, “Directive 8020” strives to innovate while retaining successful elements. Despite some pacing issues, its adventurous spirit keeps the anthology engaging. Long-time fans will find it a must-play, enjoying the familiar yet refreshed feel. The absence of the online multiplayer mode is a notable loss but doesn’t overshadow the new experiences “Directive 8020” offers.
If you’re invested in Supermassive’s work, this installment will appeal to you. If not, the changes might not sway your opinion. The rewind feature stands out for enhancing the narrative experience. Though not quite reaching “Until Dawn’s” status, it holds its ground within the series. As a consistent performer, the series continues to deliver entertaining horror tales.
Newsweek rates “Directive 8020” 6 out of 10 for its solid but imperfect experience. Despite its rating, it leaves a lasting, fond impression. The review, conducted on a PS5 Pro, was based on a code provided by the publisher.
